Edge Networking is a pretty dynamic networking group for Montreal-based entrepreneurs. On October 6th, I’ll be their guest speaker, talking about “The Entrepreneurial Trap” and what to do about it.

The numbers are pretty alarming: only 50% of startups survive their first 5 years of operations. The truth is that most business owners don’t succeed and it’s not because they’re not working hard. Rather, they are doing the wrong kind of work. This “trap” threatens the well being of the majority of entrepreneurs.

In this presentation, I’ll cover:

• The 3 roles of the entrepreneur and how every business owner must perform these roles in order to succeed;
• The flawed business structure that most entrepreneurs embrace and how it ultimately fails them;
• The underlying reason why people fall into the Entrepreneurial Trap and how to overcome it.

Monday, September 21, 2009 – YES Montreal

On September 21, 2009, I’ll be at YES Montreal, Montreal’s English-language non-profit resource centre for young entrepreneurs. The topic is called “Before the Business Plan: Essential Issues for Entrepreneurs” and we’ll talk about what you have to look at before jumping headlong into researching and writing your business plan.

Call this a little injection of reality. I have seen lots of entrepreneurs struggle because they jumped into their business without some vital checks before hand. In the presentation, I’ll cover:

• Are you ready to be an entrepreneur?
• Why businesses typically fail
• Determining market need and calculating break-even
• Getting on with life in entrepreneurship
